10 Must Have Characteristics for a CNA

Career as a certified nursing assistant is physically demanding as well as challenging.   • Compassionate Nature

Compassion is an indispensable trait in any personal care profession. CNAs are the only health care professionals which are always in direct contact with the patient.  You should be gentle and kind while listening to their problems. Your inner wish to help and care the needy people will not only give you satisfaction, but will also take you on a long way to success in nursing field.

  • Professionalism

Nursing assistants are expected to work in a variety of settings with a variety of patients, who are handicapped or elderly, sick or injured. It is most obvious that these patients are most frustrated due to feeling of loneliness, depression or self-pity. Handling these patients is a little difficult task, as they may act in an uncooperative manner or may inflict verbal abuse. Being a nurse aide, you are expected to remain calm and professional in this face of behavior. You should always focus on providing high quality care to your patients and put your personal feelings in the background.

  • Hard Working

Working as a CNA includes a lot of hard work and you are expected to spend a lot of time on your foot during your shifts. Assisting patients in their daily activities (including bathing, exercising, walking etc) requires a lot of physical labor, so you might be tired at the end of the day.

  • Detail-oriented

Job responsibilities of these professionals involve several tasks that require them to be observant, sharp and detail-oriented. Recording patient’s vital signs correctly and providing correct dosage of medication are some of the important duties, which they should perform carefully. Besides this, they must also notice the changes in the patient’s behavior or appearance and report them to them to the in-charge nurses.

  • Have a Physical Endurance

You must have good physical endurance to stay on your feet during the long hours of your shifts. As nurse aides don’t get many breaks and they are expected to remain with patients most of the times.

  • Great Communication Skills

Being a certified nursing assistant you are expected to communicate with a variety of people, like doctors, nurses, patient’s family members and the patient on a daily basis. Communicating clearly and effectively is very necessary.

  • Sound Judgment

You should have the capability of making great judgments during emergencies, especially in the absence of registered nurses or physicians. You should be able to understand patient’s current state and accurately evaluate what could be better for the patient.

  • Adaptable Nature

Typical work day of nursing assistants will require adaptability and flexibility.  You should be able to adapt the changing circumstances.

  • Emotional Stability

Nursing assistants should remain emotionally stable while noticing the changing faces of life. They are expected to control their emotions all the times, whether it is the birth of a new born baby or the death of a long-term patient which had become their friend.

  • Cheerfulness

CNAs work in a lot of gloomy environment. They should be cheerful and happy all the times to defuse any kind of troublesome situations. Your positive attitude and long lasting smile on the face can cheer up the life of your patient during his bad days.

Nursing is not a difficult career for those who have zeal of serving humanity. If you posses the above mentioned traits, then this career is surely for you.
